The Wise Old Owl's Domain

Before starting subtract, or take away sum a pupil must ensure that in each column the number at the top is larger than or equal to the one below.

The important message to learn with a divison sum is that it can be used to illustrate two, very different ideas.
.....................__6_
For example 2)1 2 ..Means twelve divide by two giving the answer six which is the half of twelve.
Also, it could mean that there are six twos in twelve.
......................__2_
Now look at 13)2 6...From this two questions could be asked 1. What is a thirteenth of twentysix or, 2. How many thirteens are there in twentysix.
The second question could be explained by saying that thirteeen is the half of twentysix.
And the first, if you had thirteen children at a party you would need to make twentysix sandwiches to give two for each child.

The Wise Old Owl, (his signature is WOO, and he makes that call when flying at night) wants to thank you for coming to him for his advice. He says that you're not to worry about the colour of the clock-face at 12 noon, (midday; and likewise at midnight) for the whole clock-face would be completely covered, only to be completely clear a moment afterwards, ready for the next round of 12hours....then on again for ever.

WOO wants you to be wiser still, and he has drawn a large clock-face with his beak to give a clear understanding of what happens in one whole day. Please don't tease him about the mistake he made, (have you noticed it?...he went too fast with his beak and over-ran a good bit outside the circle....shhhh!) or, if you do, he will certainly tweak you with his beak, and pack you off to Topsy Turvy where he was sent, in his younger days, to practise and practise in order to become mathematically wonderful, a real whizz-kid.

WOO has drawn two 12hour circles of colour (black for the hours of darkness, yellow for daylight) to represent the 24 hours in each and every whole day....Try to realise the significance of the colouring as you begin to count the early hours from midnight onwards, on the inside circle-coming up to wake-up time at 7, or 8 o'clock (8 hours of the morning will have passed by then.)....But the morning goes on and ends at 12 noon (midday). That is the end of the first 12 hours....Then counting carries on to the outside circle for the next 12 hours, from 12 noon onwards, on through the afternoon into the evening and darkness up to midnight. That is the end of the second 12 hours.
