This practice
will prepare pupils to work with multiplication and division in
six stages to give a total of 72 multiplication facts and 72 division facts:-
When going from one side to another, as will happen when producing sheets
to work with a good tip to remember is to use the 'Back' button on the top
left of the scroll bar.
First of
all it is necessary to make some dotted strips.
See Dot Strips1 and Dot
Strips 2
Thes can be a good substite for the practises with string of beads.
Side 1A has multiplication facts, up to 15 (grey),
then to 20 (brown).
Side1B
has the corresponding division facts.
Side
2A has multiplication facts up to 30 (green) then up to 40 (yellow).
Side 2B
has the corresponding division facts.
Side
3A has multiplication facts, up to 48 (orange) then up to 81 (blue).
Side 3B has the corresponding division facts.
(Use
a small flat, wall-painters tool, with medium-thick P.V.A. to smear all over,
then stick together the sheets back to back. Then, when dry, cut them into
6 sets of 12 cards in each colour).
Beanstalks will be used along with two check cards to measure multiples of
2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9.
Division facts will be proved using the same material.
See Check Card Sheet
What is most important
is that pupils almost at the beginning will be developing sufficient expertise
to be independent of adult help.
They will also become more and more aware of an aspect on tenness as the
practices continue. In time y.l's will have developed subconsciously a good
understanding of tenness in every two figure number. This is a good preparation
which will have to come in readiness for decimal displays. It is an important
part of a y.l's understanding of the structure of the decimal counting system.
